How Does A LVDT Sensor Work?

Friday, January 27, 2023

An LVDT (Linear Variable Differential Transformer) sensor is a type of electrical transducer that can measure linear displacement or position. It works by converting the physical movement of a target object into an electrical signal that can be read and processed by a computer or other electronic device.

The basic components of an LVDT sensor include a primary coil, a secondary coil, and a core or "slider" that moves within the coils. The primary coil is connected to an alternating current (AC) power source, which generates an electromagnetic field that induces an electrical current in the secondary coil. As the core or slider moves within the coils, the induced current in the secondary coil changes, which can be used to calculate the position or displacement of the core or slider.

One of the main advantages of LVDT sensors is their high accuracy and precision. They can typically measure linear displacement or position with an accuracy of less than 0.01% of the full range of the sensor, making them ideal for applications that require precise measurements.

Another advantage of LVDT sensors is their high resolution. They can typically resolve movement on the order of micrometers, which makes them useful for applications that require fine measurement such as in manufacturing, machine tool and metrological applications.

LVDT sensors are also highly durable and reliable. They have no moving parts, which means that they are resistant to wear and tear, and can last for many years with little or no maintenance.

In addition, LVDT sensors are easy to use and interface with other electronic devices. They are typically interfaced with signal conditioner which converts the sensor's analog output into a digital signal that can be read and processed by a computer or other electronic device.

In summary, LVDT sensors are an excellent choice for applications that require precise, accurate, and reliable measurements of linear displacement or position. They are highly durable, easy to use, and can be interfaced with a variety of electronic devices.
